It was unusually quiet at CU-Boulder last Friday. Graduation had left the campus void of student energy, but things were building up in the Glenn Miller Ballroom as the Healing Explosion with Sandra Kennedy got underway. It was the fourth and final meeting of the annual City on the Hill healing conference.
A trimmed down band of guitar, djembe and vocalist set the worship tone. Dr. Kennedy was accompanied from Augusta, Ga. by her associate pastor Velda Schirhart, and Aaron, a physical therapist. He's one of a growing number of medical professionals who embrace spiritual components as part of their medical care.
"You've got to get the Word of God in you!" Dr. Kennedy explained. "Let it manifest in your heart. The key to divine healing is expectancy."
The truth of divine healing settled over the audience when she dropped this bomb: "Healing and salvation come the same way - BY FAITH!"
In the Gospel of Mark Chapter 6, Jesus' ability to heal was hindered by their unbelief. " See how their reasoning limited God? And they were offended by Jesus, too. When your head conflicts with your heart, which one do you trust," Kennedy asked.; "Trust your heart, and then renew your mind with God's word."
Dr. Kennedy offered one other element to the divine healing picture. "Let there be no more begging God to do what He has already done. Instead, let us thank God for what He has done (through healing us through the stripes on Jesus' back). Praise is route for your healing to travel. Agree with God and give thanks!"
A final note from this reporter: this divine healing service was remarkably free of drama. Not too much yelling or screaming or falling down or extra-dramatic displays. It was nothing like the caricatures of healing meetings one sees on television or in movies.
What were the results?; One man ran around the room excitedly. After suffering a shattered heel in an auto accident, he said it was the first time he'd run in six months. One woman who had muscle tissue removed from her arm experienced new strength. Another woman believed that her daughter would no longer be retarded. A man with an elbow injury lifted his arm over his head for the first time since surgery. And a man testified that his hip pain was gone.
(City on the Hill's divine healing room is open Sundays at 2:00 p.m., except holidays.)
